WHAT DOES THIS STANDARD COVER?

ISO 8503-5 specifies a field method for determining the surface profile of abrasive blast-cleaned steel using replica tape and a suitable measuring gauge before the application of paint or other protective coatings. The method provides a practical means of obtaining a numerical assessment of blast profile and is widely applicable to protective coating inspection where verification of surface preparation is required.

WHY IS IT RELEVANT?

Surface profile is an important characteristic of abrasive blast-cleaned steel because the profile produced must be appropriate for the protective coating system being applied. Replica tape enables inspectors to obtain and record a representation of the blast profile at selected locations before the surface is coated. The measurement should be interpreted in accordance with the applicable standard, project specification and coating system requirements. A higher surface profile should not automatically be considered better.

KEY INSPECTION CONSIDERATIONS

ISO 8503-5 describes the replica tape method for determining the surface profile of blast-cleaned steel. Replica tape is compressed against the prepared surface so that the surface profile is replicated in the tape. The replica is then measured using an appropriate thickness gauge and interpreted in accordance with the applicable procedure. The method provides a quantitative surface-profile measurement rather than a comparator classification. The selected replica tape grade must be appropriate for the expected profile range.

WHAT THE STANDARD SHOULD NOT BE USED TO ASSUME

Replica tape has a defined working range and should not be used outside the range applicable to the selected tape grade and procedure. A surface-profile measurement should not be confused with the ISO 19840 roughness correction applied during DFT assessment. Surface profile also does not establish visual cleanliness or soluble-salt contamination. Each of these characteristics requires its own inspection and acceptance assessment.

PRACTICAL INSPECTION APPLICATION

Replica tape is commonly used after abrasive blast cleaning where the project requires a quantitative surface-profile result. Inspectors should select an appropriate tape grade, take measurements at representative locations and record the resulting profile values against the project or coating-manufacturer requirement. Where profile varies significantly across the prepared surface, additional measurements may be appropriate to understand the range present.
