WHAT DOES THIS STANDARD COVER?

Defines ISO surface profile comparators used for assessing the profile of abrasive blast-cleaned steel surfaces.

WHY IS IT RELEVANT?

Relevant when classifying blast-cleaned steel surface profile and when surface-profile grade is used as part of coating inspection and DFT assessment.

KEY INSPECTION CONSIDERATIONS

ISO 8503-1 establishes terminology and definitions associated with the surface roughness of blast-cleaned steel substrates and ISO surface-profile comparators. Surface profile is an important characteristic of prepared steel because it can influence coating application, coating thickness measurement and coating-system performance. Surface profile should be considered separately from visual surface cleanliness. Where profile grades are used in conjunction with ISO 19840, the Fine, Medium and Coarse classifications can be associated with DFT correction values. Those correction values are not themselves measurements of surface-profile height.

WHAT THE STANDARD SHOULD NOT BE USED TO ASSUME

A visually clean abrasive blast-cleaned surface does not automatically have the required surface profile. Similarly, the ISO 19840 correction values associated with Fine, Medium and Coarse profile classifications should not be reported as measured profile amplitudes. Surface-profile acceptance requirements should come from the project specification, coating manufacturer or other applicable technical requirement. There is no single profile value appropriate for every coating system.

PRACTICAL INSPECTION APPLICATION

Inspectors should establish whether the project requires a surface-profile classification or a quantitative surface-profile measurement. Where ISO surface-profile comparators are specified, the appropriate comparator and assessment method should be used. Where a numerical profile measurement is required, another applicable method such as replica tape may be specified. Surface-profile results should be recorded separately from visual cleanliness assessments.

RELATED PIL GUIDANCE

Measuring dry film thickness on abrasive blast-cleaned steel is not the same as measuring a coating on a smooth surface. ISO 19840 provides a method for accounting for the influence of surface roughness when verifying coating thickness against the specified nominal dry film thickness.
