TECHNICAL STANDARD
ISO 12944-9
Paints and varnishes — Corrosion protection of steel structures by protective paint systems — Part 9: Protective paint systems and laboratory performance test methods for offshore and related structures
ISO
Edition 1 / 2018
Current
WHAT DOES THIS STANDARD COVER?
Addresses protective paint systems and laboratory performance testing for offshore and related structures exposed to severe marine environments.
WHY IS IT RELEVANT?
Relevant to inspection and technical review of protective coating systems intended for severe marine and offshore exposure within the scope of the standard. Do not apply its requirements indiscriminately to every marine or industrial structure.
KEY INSPECTION CONSIDERATIONS
The standard addresses protective paint systems and laboratory performance testing for offshore and related structures exposed to severe environments. Relevant exposures can include atmosphere, moisture, salt, immersion, splash and mechanical influences. Coating system qualification and field application are separate considerations. Successful laboratory performance does not remove the need for appropriate surface preparation, application and inspection controls.
WHAT THE STANDARD SHOULD NOT BE USED TO ASSUME
Laboratory qualification does not guarantee a particular service life on an actual structure. Field performance can be influenced by surface preparation, application, coating thickness, environmental conditions, detailing, damage and actual service exposure. Systems intended for severe offshore environments should not automatically be assumed appropriate for unrelated exposure conditions.
PRACTICAL INSPECTION APPLICATION
For severe-environment projects, inspectors can review whether the specified or approved coating system is appropriate to the project requirements and verify surface preparation, individual coats, thickness and application conditions. Qualification evidence should be distinguished from records demonstrating how the coating system was actually applied to the asset.

STATUS AND SOURCE VERIFICATION
ISO 12944-9:2018 remains current and was confirmed by ISO in 2025. ISO/CD 12944-5 Edition 5 is under development and is intended eventually to replace ISO 12944-9:2018 as well as ISO 12944-5:2019. Until a replacement is published, retain ISO 12944-9:2018 as current.
