TECHNICAL STANDARD
ISO 12944-5
Paints and varnishes — Corrosion protection of steel structures by protective paint systems — Part 5: Protective paint systems
ISO
Edition 4 / 2019
Current
WHAT DOES THIS STANDARD COVER?
Describes commonly used types of protective paint and paint systems for corrosion protection of steel structures and provides guidance relating to system selection.
WHY IS IT RELEVANT?
Relevant when reviewing protective coating specifications and assessing whether proposed coating systems are appropriate for the intended environment, surface preparation and durability requirements. Do not present the examples within ISO 12944-5 as the only permissible coating systems.
KEY INSPECTION CONSIDERATIONS
The standard addresses types of protective paint systems. System selection should consider the environment, required durability, substrate, surface preparation, application and service conditions. A protective coating system consists of compatible layers working together rather than individual coatings considered in isolation. Inspection should verify the actual coating system, individual coats and relevant manufacturer documentation.
WHAT THE STANDARD SHOULD NOT BE USED TO ASSUME
A coating system associated with a particular environmental category should not be treated as a universal solution. Suitability can depend on surface preparation, substrate, application conditions and other project-specific factors. Manufacturer instructions remain relevant. Alternative systems may be used where their suitability has been established.
PRACTICAL INSPECTION APPLICATION
Inspectors can use the standard when reviewing the specified coating system and understanding the required coating sequence, products, number of coats, nominal thickness requirements and application limitations. Inspection should verify that the system actually installed corresponds with the project coating specification and applicable manufacturer documentation.
