TECHNICAL STANDARD

ISO 11126-9

Preparation of steel substrates before application of paints and related products — Specifications for non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives — Part 9: Staurolite

ISO

Edition 1 / 1999

Current

WHAT DOES THIS STANDARD COVER?

Specifies requirements for staurolite supplied as a non-metallic abrasive for blast-cleaning.

WHY IS IT RELEVANT?

Relevant where staurolite abrasive is specified and its properties require verification as part of surface-preparation quality control. Requirements apply to abrasive supplied in the new condition and not to abrasive during or after use.

KEY INSPECTION CONSIDERATIONS

The standard addresses requirements for staurolite supplied as a new non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasive. Material characteristics can influence blasting performance and the resulting prepared surface. The abrasive should be considered in relation to the specified blasting process and required surface condition.

WHAT THE STANDARD SHOULD NOT BE USED TO ASSUME

Compliance with the abrasive specification does not independently demonstrate that the required visual preparation grade, surface profile or contamination condition has been achieved. Requirements applying to new abrasive should not automatically be assumed to represent its condition after use, contamination or unsuitable handling.

PRACTICAL INSPECTION APPLICATION

Inspectors can review abrasive identification, available documentation and any specified abrasive test information. The resulting prepared surface should then be inspected separately against the project requirements for visual cleanliness, surface profile and contamination.
