TECHNICAL STANDARD

ISO 11126-10

Preparation of steel substrates before application of paints and related products — Specifications for non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives — Part 10: Almandite garnet

ISO

Edition 3 / 2025

Current

WHAT DOES THIS STANDARD COVER?

Specifies requirements for almandite garnet supplied as a non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasive.

WHY IS IT RELEVANT?

Relevant to abrasive selection and verification where garnet is specified for surface preparation. The requirements apply to abrasive supplied in the new condition and should not be represented as requirements for abrasive during or after use.

KEY INSPECTION CONSIDERATIONS

The standard addresses requirements for almandite garnet supplied as a new non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasive. Abrasive grading, physical characteristics and potential soluble contamination can be relevant to blasting behaviour and prepared-surface quality. Selection should be considered in relation to the blasting process and required surface condition.

WHAT THE STANDARD SHOULD NOT BE USED TO ASSUME

Compliance of garnet abrasive with its specification does not itself demonstrate that the prepared surface has achieved the required visual cleanliness, surface profile or soluble salt condition. Abrasive condition can also be affected by storage, handling and use.

PRACTICAL INSPECTION APPLICATION

Inspectors can review the specified abrasive type, available supporting documentation and storage condition and consider specified abrasive testing where required. The prepared surface should be inspected independently against the project's visual cleanliness, surface profile and contamination requirements.
