TECHNICAL STANDARD
ASTM D4417
Standard Test Methods for Field Measurement of Surface Profile of Blast Cleaned Steel
ASTM International
2021
Current
WHAT DOES THIS STANDARD COVER?
Covers field, shop and laboratory techniques for measuring the surface profile of abrasive blast-cleaned steel.
WHY IS IT RELEVANT?
Relevant when verifying that the profile produced by surface preparation conforms to coating-manufacturer or project specification requirements. Do not treat different surface-profile measurement methods as automatically interchangeable. ASTM D4417 itself references SSPC-PA 17 as providing additional guidance for determining conformance with surface-profile requirements.
KEY INSPECTION CONSIDERATIONS
ASTM D4417 describes field methods for measuring the surface profile of blast-cleaned steel. Surface-profile height can influence the performance of protective coatings and should be assessed where a profile requirement has been established by the project specification or coating manufacturer. The standard contains different measurement techniques, and the method used should be identified when reporting results. Surface geometry, measurement location and the characteristics of the prepared surface can influence measurements and should be considered during inspection.
WHAT THE STANDARD SHOULD NOT BE USED TO ASSUME
Surface-profile measurement does not establish visual surface cleanliness, soluble-salt contamination or dust cleanliness. A numerical surface-profile value should not be assumed to be acceptable simply because it has been measured in accordance with ASTM D4417. Acceptance should be based on the specified profile requirement for the coating system and project. Results obtained using different surface-profile measurement methods should not automatically be assumed to be directly interchangeable.
PRACTICAL INSPECTION APPLICATION
ASTM D4417 is commonly used following abrasive blast cleaning and before coating application where quantitative surface-profile measurement is required. Inspectors should identify the measurement method used, select representative test locations and record the resulting profile values. Results should be assessed against the applicable project or coating-manufacturer requirement. Where conformance across a defined area is required, the applicable sampling and conformance requirements should also be considered.

Measuring dry film thickness on abrasive blast-cleaned steel is not the same as measuring a coating on a smooth surface. ISO 19840 provides a method for accounting for the influence of surface roughness when verifying coating thickness against the specified nominal dry film thickness.
