Power Tool Cleaning
AMPP / SSPC

WHAT DOES THIS STANDARD COVER?
Defines a degree of surface preparation using power-assisted tools to remove specified loose surface material before application of protective coatings.
WHY IS IT RELEVANT?
Commonly relevant to maintenance painting, local coating repairs and areas where abrasive blast cleaning is impractical. Do not confuse SP 3 with SP 11 Power Tool Cleaning to Bare Metal.
KEY INSPECTION CONSIDERATIONS
The standard addresses power-tool cleaning of steel surfaces. Power tools are used to remove loose rust, loose mill scale, loose coating and other detrimental material. Inspection should focus on the resulting prepared surface rather than the use of a particular tool. Tool selection, access, substrate condition and operator technique can influence the result.
WHAT THE STANDARD SHOULD NOT BE USED TO ASSUME
General power-tool cleaning should not be confused with SSPC-SP 11 power-tool cleaning to bare metal. It should not automatically be considered equivalent to abrasive blast cleaning. Completion of power-tool cleaning does not independently demonstrate absence of soluble salts, oil, grease or other non-visible contamination.
PRACTICAL INSPECTION APPLICATION
The standard is commonly relevant to maintenance and local repair work. Inspectors can assess removal of loose detrimental material, retained coating, edges, pits, welds, difficult-access areas and transitions between prepared and existing surfaces.
