WHAT DOES THIS STANDARD COVER?

Provides visual preparation grades and flash-rust grades associated with water-jetting of steel surfaces before coating.

WHY IS IT RELEVANT?

Relevant when inspecting steel prepared by water jetting. Visual cleanliness should not be treated as confirmation that invisible contamination or surface-profile requirements have also been satisfied.

KEY INSPECTION CONSIDERATIONS

ISO 8501-4 addresses the visual assessment of steel surfaces associated with high-pressure water jetting, including initial surface conditions, preparation grades and flash-rust grades. Water jetting behaves differently from abrasive blast cleaning. It can remove coatings, corrosion products and surface contamination without necessarily producing a new angular surface profile. Inspection should therefore distinguish between the visual cleanliness achieved by water jetting, the condition of any existing surface profile and the degree of flash rust that develops after preparation. Invisible contamination and surface roughness remain separate inspection characteristics and may require assessment using other applicable standards.

WHAT THE STANDARD SHOULD NOT BE USED TO ASSUME

A water-jetted surface should not automatically be described using abrasive blast-cleaning grades such as Sa 2½ unless the applicable specification and assessment method explicitly support that terminology. Visual cleanliness does not demonstrate that soluble salts or other non-visible contaminants satisfy project requirements. Water jetting also does not necessarily create a new surface profile. Where profile is important, the condition and suitability of the existing substrate profile should be separately assessed. Flash rust should be assessed using the applicable water-jetting requirements rather than automatically being treated as evidence that the complete preparation process has failed.

PRACTICAL INSPECTION APPLICATION

ISO 8501-4 may be used when inspecting steel prepared by high-pressure water jetting before application of a protective coating system. The inspector should record the initial surface condition where required, assess the resulting preparation grade and assess any subsequent flash rust against the specified requirement. Where the project also controls soluble salts, surface profile, environmental conditions or other surface characteristics, these should be inspected separately using the applicable methods and acceptance criteria.
