TECHNICAL STANDARD

ISO 11124-3

Preparation of steel substrates before application of paints and related products — Specifications for metallic blast-cleaning abrasives — Part 3: High-carbon cast-steel shot and grit

ISO

Edition 2 / 2018

Current

WHAT DOES THIS STANDARD COVER?

Specifies requirements for high-carbon cast-steel shot and grit supplied for blast-cleaning.

WHY IS IT RELEVANT?

Relevant where metallic shot or grit is specified and abrasive type, grading and properties require verification as part of surface-preparation quality control. Requirements relate to abrasive supplied in the new condition.

KEY INSPECTION CONSIDERATIONS

The standard addresses requirements for high-carbon cast-steel shot and grit supplied as new metallic blast-cleaning abrasives. Different abrasive forms and grades can influence blasting behaviour and the surface produced. Abrasive selection should be considered together with the blasting process and required prepared-surface condition.

WHAT THE STANDARD SHOULD NOT BE USED TO ASSUME

Compliance with the abrasive specification does not independently demonstrate achievement of the required visual surface preparation or surface profile. Requirements applying to new abrasive should not automatically be assumed to demonstrate continuing suitability after repeated use. Abrasive condition, blasting operation and prepared-surface acceptance should be considered separately.

PRACTICAL INSPECTION APPLICATION

Inspectors can verify the specified abrasive designation and available supporting documentation and separately assess the prepared surface for visual cleanliness, surface profile and contamination requirements. Where metallic abrasive is recycled, its continuing condition and the recycling process should also be considered where applicable.
