Reactive coatings for fire protection of steel elements

WHAT DOES THIS STANDARD COVER?
EAD 350402-00-1106 is a European Assessment Document covering reactive coatings intended for the fire protection of steel elements. It provides an assessment basis for reactive fire-protection coating products and kits used on steel. Depending on the assessed product or kit, the system can include the reactive coating together with specified primers, topcoats and/or reinforcement. The EAD is used as the assessment basis for European Technical Assessments for applicable reactive coating products.
WHY IS IT RELEVANT?
For intumescent coating inspection, EAD 350402-00-1106 helps establish the importance of considering the approved coating system as a whole, rather than viewing the reactive layer in isolation. The applicable European Technical Assessment and manufacturer documentation for the specific product can define relevant system components, intended use and assessed configurations. Inspection should therefore verify the installed coating work against the documentation applicable to the specific project and product. The EAD should not be presented as a universal site installation specification or as providing one universal DFT for a given fire-resistance period.
KEY INSPECTION CONSIDERATIONS
The document addresses reactive coating products and systems used for fire protection of steel elements. Inspection should consider the complete approved system together with the specific steel member and project fire-protection design. Relevant factors can include the approved product system, steel member, section factor, required fire-resistance period, design basis, primer, reactive coating thickness and any required topcoat. Compliance should therefore be assessed against the applicable project and product documentation rather than against a generic coating thickness.
WHAT THE STANDARD SHOULD NOT BE USED TO ASSUME
Dry film thickness alone does not demonstrate that a steel element will achieve a particular fire-resistance performance. Required reactive coating thickness can vary according to the approved system, steel section, section factor, fire-resistance requirement and other design parameters. The thickness of the reactive layer should also be distinguished from the total thickness of a coating system that may include primer and topcoat. Requirements applicable to one product, member or design condition should not automatically be transferred to another.
PRACTICAL INSPECTION APPLICATION
Inspectors can verify the specified and approved reactive coating system and review the applicable project thickness schedule or design information before assessing application. Inspection can include substrate and primer condition, reactive coating application, measured coating thickness, detailing, damage and any specified topcoat. Inspection records should provide sufficient traceability to relate measurements and observations to the relevant steel member or inspection area and the applicable project requirements.

STATUS AND SOURCE VERIFICATION
EAD 350402-00-1106 verified against EOTA in September 2026 as the European Assessment Document for reactive coatings for fire protection of steel elements. EOTA identifies former ETAG 018 Part 2 as superseded by this EAD. Current European Technical Assessments continue to cite EAD 350402-00-1106 as their assessment basis.
