ASTM E1252
Standard Practice for General Techniques for Obtaining Infrared Spectra for Qualitative Analysis
ASTM International

WHAT DOES THIS STANDARD COVER?
ASTM E1252 provides general practices for obtaining infrared spectra for qualitative analysis. In protective coating investigations, infrared spectroscopy — including FTIR — can provide analytical information that assists with characterising coating materials and identifying generic chemical or binder characteristics when interpreted by a competent laboratory. The practice provides a general analytical framework rather than a coating-specific condition assessment or maintenance specification.
WHY IS IT RELEVANT?
FTIR analysis can form part of an investigation into existing protective coating systems where coating history or generic binder chemistry is uncertain. This can be particularly useful during coating condition surveys, maintenance planning and failure investigations. Laboratory findings should be considered alongside field evidence such as coating condition, layer structure, dry film thickness, adhesion, corrosion, defects and maintenance history. FTIR analysis alone should not be interpreted as proving coating compatibility, identifying an exact commercial product or determining remaining coating service life.
KEY INSPECTION CONSIDERATIONS
The practice provides general techniques for obtaining infrared spectra for qualitative analysis. FTIR analysis can support coating investigations by providing information about chemical characteristics and broad binder chemistry. Interpretation of aged, weathered, contaminated or multilayer coating samples can be more complex than analysis of a known reference material.
WHAT THE STANDARD SHOULD NOT BE USED TO ASSUME
FTIR analysis should not automatically be treated as identifying an exact commercial coating product. Identification of broad chemical or binder characteristics does not independently establish the complete formulation, manufacturer, coating age, remaining service life or overcoating compatibility. Weathering, contamination, pigments, fillers and multiple coating layers can affect interpretation. Results should be considered alongside site observations and coating history.
PRACTICAL INSPECTION APPLICATION
FTIR can support pre-condition surveys, coating failure investigations and maintenance planning where information about existing coating chemistry is useful. Samples should be representative and linked to the investigation question. Results can be considered alongside coating layer information, thickness, adhesion, substrate condition and available coating history. Overcoating compatibility should not be determined from FTIR alone.

STATUS AND SOURCE VERIFICATION
ASTM E1252-98(2021) verified in September 2026 as an active ASTM practice covering general techniques for obtaining infrared spectra for qualitative analysis. It is used within the PIL knowledge base as a general analytical reference relevant to FTIR examination rather than as a protective coating maintenance specification.
