South Shields Ferry Landing

Paint Inspection Ltd carried out a comprehensive protective coating condition survey of South Shields Ferry Landing to assess the existing condition of the coating systems and provide evidence-based recommendations for future major maintenance.

THE PROJECT

The survey covered key structural elements of the ferry landing including the bascule tower, link span, pontoon railings, pilings and support frames. Operating within a demanding marine and tidal environment, these elements are exposed to conditions that can accelerate coating deterioration and corrosion. A detailed understanding of the existing coating systems and their condition was therefore required to support future maintenance planning.

OUR INVOLVEMENT

Paint Inspection Ltd undertook a detailed assessment combining visual inspection, field testing and laboratory analysis. The survey included visual assessment of protective coating condition; dry film thickness measurement; adhesion testing; investigation of the existing historic coating system, identifying up to six coating layers; corrosion and coating-defect mapping; identification of flaking and delamination; assessment of deterioration in high-traffic and tidal areas; sampling and laboratory analysis of existing coatings; and development of recommendations for future maintenance.

TECHNICAL APPROACH

The survey combined site observations with measurable inspection data and laboratory analysis to develop a more complete understanding of the existing protective coating systems. Particular attention was given to areas affected by corrosion, coating breakdown, flaking and delamination, together with locations subjected to tidal exposure and operational wear. Investigation of the historic coating system identified areas containing up to six layers of previous coatings. Laboratory analysis was used to provide additional information on the existing materials and support decisions regarding future treatment and coating compatibility. The asset operates within a highly aggressive marine environment, making appropriate surface preparation, coating-system selection and compatibility particularly important when planning future maintenance.

THE OUTCOME

The completed survey provided a structured assessment of coating condition across the ferry landing and identified areas requiring different levels of intervention. Paint Inspection Ltd provided recommendations including targeted coating repairs, areas requiring more extensive recoating and the use of compatibility trials where appropriate before future coating work. The resulting information provided the asset owner with an evidence-based roadmap to support major maintenance planning and the continued protection of this important transport asset.
